DeKALB, Ill. - Each week, NIU honors two student-athletes that exemplify the concept of the "student-athlete" supremely well. These students excel both in the classroom and on the playing field. This week, the honorees are Shane Wimann of football and Kelsey Hildreth of cross country.
The following Huskies have been nominated to the Mid-American Conference for the league's weekly Scholar Athlete of the Week awards. NIU student-athletes won 10 times during the 2014-15 season, tied for the most in the conference.

Week's Achievements:
Shane Wimann made his first career catch count on Saturday night. The redshirt sophomore tight end scored a 16-yard touchdown late in the first half, cutting a 17-3 deficit to 17-10 and setting up NIU's second-half surge as the Huskies rallied past the UNLV Rebels 38-30 in the 2015 football season opener. Earning significant playing time at tight end, Wimann scored NIU's first touchdown of the season and also blocked for an offense that tallied 208 rushing yards and three scores while also contributing to quarterback Drew Hare's career-high 360 passing yards in Saturday's victory. |
Week's Achievements:
Kelsey Hildreth opened her 2015 cross country season with a strong performance at the Illini Challenge, finishing second in a time of 17:48.0 and helping the NIU cross country team beat Missouri of the SEC in points. Hildreth helped new NIU cross country head coach Adrian Myers have a successful coaching debut as the Huskies challenged host Illinois for the team victory at the meet as well. Hildreth was only beaten in the race at the wire by one racer in the meet: Illinois' returning All-Big 10 runner Alyssa Schneider. |
