MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Northern Illinois University women’s tennis team earned its first victory of the season on Monday morning, convincingly beating North Dakota in nonconference action by a 6-1 scoreline in Minneapolis, Minn.

The Huskies (1-1) won five of the six singles matches and added the doubles point to down North Dakota (0-2) as the two teams squared off on the courts of Minnesota’s Baseline Tennis Center. Adey Osabuohien (Hazel Crest, Ill./Stony Brook) and Cristina Alvarez (Zaragoza, Spain/Cristorey and Sagrado Corazon de Jesus) led the way for the Huskies, winning the top two singles matches in straight sets and combining to win their No. 1 doubles match as well.

Also picking up wins in singles and doubles were Abigail Dekkinga (Allegan, Mich./Allegan), Evelyn Youel (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) and Meghan Montgomerie (Irvin, Scotland/Beaconhurst), with each leveling their spring season record at 2-2 after dropping matches to Minnesota on Sunday. Osabuohien and Montgomerie also won their first spring matches as Huskies on Monday.

NIU women’s tennis head coach Tanya Gombera praised her team’s ability to win close sets on Monday, which made the difference as every close match went the way of the Huskies.

“It feels great to get our first win of the season. We were able to pull out some hard-fought matches, which is always good,” Gombera said after the victory. “The team is now looking forward to playing Lewis this Friday.”

The Huskies will next play when they face the Flyers of Lewis on Friday, Jan. 22 at 1:45 p.m. CT in Aurora, Ill.
