NIU Scholar Athletes of the Week: Jan. 18-24

Jan. 25, 2016 DeKALB, Ill. - Each week, NIU honors two student-athletes that exemplify the concept of the "student-athlete" supremely well. These students excel both in the classroom and on the playing field. This week, the honorees are Tom Hjertonsson of men's tennis and Abigail Dekkinga of women's tennis.

NIU student-athletes won 10 times during the 2014-15 season, tied for the most in the conference, and have already won four times this year as well.

Week's Achievements:
Tom Hjertonsson made a great start to his 2016 season by posting singles wins against Wisconsin, Detroit and UW-Whitewater to help the Huskies to a 2-1 start over the weekend. Hjertonsson also added two doubles wins in NIU’s wins over Detroit and UW-Whitewater, making the sophomore the only Huskie to start the season with a 5-1 overall record through three dual matches.
 Week's Achievements:
Abigail Dekkinga posted a perfect week to play a role in the NIU women’s tennis team’s 2-0 week with victories over North Dakota and Lewis. Dekkinga went 4-0 by sweeping her singles and doubles matches, including a thrilling come-from-behind win over Preethi Kasilingam of UND, 6-7-6-4, 10-1. The NIU sophomore was one of three Huskies to go 4-0 overall in the two dual wins.
