PEORIA, Ill. –
The Northern Illinois University women’s tennis team was unable to extend its winning streak to three matches as the Huskies dropped a 4-3 decision at Bradley on Saturday morning.

The Huskies (2-2) won the doubles point and the top two singles matches but couldn’t get the crucial fourth team point as the Braves (1-2) won the third, fourth, fifth and sixth singles contests to secure the overall victory in the dual.

NIU women’s tennis head coach Tanya Gombera was disappointed as her team was edged by the Braves for the first time ever, ending the Huskies’ seven-year winning streak over Bradley.

“It was a tough loss for the team today,” Gombera said. “I thought we played well in certain spots. All credit goes to Bradley for competing well and winning some close matches.”

Two singles matches went to third sets and numerous other sets in singles and doubles came down to the final games with late breaks as the Huskies and Braves battled back and forth throughout the morning at the Tennis Clubs at River City North in Peoria, Ill.

Leading the Huskies, NIU senior Cristina Alvarez (Zaragoza, Spain/Cristorey Sagrado Corazon de Jesus) won both her No. 2 singles match and her No. 1 doubles match with partner Adey Osabuohien (Hazel Crest, Ill./Stony Brook) to take the Huskie veteran to 98 career combined wins. Osabuohien also won her singles match at No. 1 over Bradley’s top player, Ariel Dechter.

The Huskies will look to return to winning ways next Saturday when they host Cleveland State at the Boylan Tennis Center at 11 a.m. CT in Rockford, Ill.
