Scholar Athletes of the Week: Winter Break

Jan. 4, 2016 DeKALB, Ill. - Each week, NIU honors two student-athletes that exemplify the concept of the "student-athlete" supremely well. These students excel both in the classroom and on the playing field. This week, the honorees are Quinton Rosser of wrestling and Kelly Smith of women's basketball.

NIU student-athletes won 10 times during the 2014-15 season, tied for the most in the conference, and have already won four times this year as well.

Week's Achievements:
Quinton Rosser played a role in a hugely successful winter break for the NIU wrestling team. First, the sophomore 184-pounder posted a very impressive 10-3 decision over Cale Wilson of Grand Canyon University as the Huskies defeated GCU by a dominating 29-4 scoreline in Phoenix for a nice road dual win. Rosser was then on the traveling roster as the Huskies finished 19th as a team with 35.0 points at the prestigious Midlands Championships against a nationally stacked field.
 Week's Achievements:
Kelly Smith helped the Huskies go 5-1 over the winter break and begin MAC play with a victory at Akron as the NIU women’s basketball team stretched its winning streak to four games thanks to a key road win over the Zips. Smith finished as NIU’s third leading scorer with nine points and added three rebounds in tat game. The sophomore starting forward also contributed 10 points and three rebounds earlier in the week in the Huskies’ 68-50 victory over Chicago State on the road and was a starter in each of the six games during the NIU women's basketball team's surge.
