DeKALB – The NIU women's basketball team's (3-1) single-game record tying three-point shooting and collective scoring stymied Chicago State (0-4) Tuesday night in the NIU Convocation Center as five Huskies accounted for 10-or-more points, overpowering Sh'Toya Sanders and Kaylee Allen, who combined for 58 points. Northern Illinois University defeated CSU, 94-85, scoring 90-or-more points for the third time this season.
Northern Illinois University tied its single-game for field goals from behind the arc at 15, matching the effort versus Western Michigan on Feb. 26, 2006 and shattered its old record of 29 against the Broncos with 37 attempts against CSU.
Sophomore
Courtney Woods scored a career-high 24 points to lead NIU, draining a personal-best six three-pointers.
Ally Lehman had a well-balanced effort, scoring 15 points with nine assists and eight rebounds while
Cassidy Glenn (15),
Janae Poisson (12) and
Mikayla Voigt (10) also aided with double-digit efforts.
"This was one of those games with a lot of moments where you shake your head. We came out of the locker room ready to play and shot the basketball extremely well but we had our lapses, especially in the second quarter," said Head Coach
Lisa Carlsen. "We struggled to find a flow in the game in the second half. We gave up a lot of free throws on last option plays and that's not when we're at our best.
"There are a lot of situations we need to clean up but this is a game where you break down the film and show the kids the things that we talked about and continue to grow," added Carlsen.
NIU posted an impressive start to the contest, converting its first five field goal attempts including four straight treys to open the game, as NIU led by 10 points less than three minutes into the game. The Huskies would finish the quarter with a 16-point lead, 28-12, as they shot 11-for-22 from the field.
Lehman's ball movement resulted in five assists during the quarter, four of which came during NIU's 5-for-5 start from the field.
With 4:20 left in the opening half, Northern Illinois University led by 22 – its biggest lead of the half – as Glenn hit her second of three three-pointers in the contest. However, the Cougars would not be stopped in waning minutes of the half as it went on an 11-0 run in a 1:35 span to close the gap to 11 points at the half, 48-37.
Both Woods and Glenn reached double figures in the half as the senior totaled 12 and Woods recorded 10.
After halftime, NIU made it a 14-point game, 53-39, then did its best to contain Sanders as the sophomore accounted 13 points and eight rebounds, including seven points from the free throw line.
After CSU closed the game to five points with 4:24 remaining in the period, NIU ended the quarter with a 73-60 advantage as
Jazmine Harris (West Allis, Wis./Heritage Christian) collected her own missed shot and converted a putback.
While Sanders continued to try and claw the Cougars a lead, Lehman answered at the free throw line and in the field as she went 6-for-6 at the line and closed the quarter with 10 points and 15 on the night.
All six of Lehman's shots at the stripe came in the final 39 seconds of action as she lifted NIU to a nine-point win over the Cougars, 94-85.
Sanders led both teams with 38 points and 23 rebounds in the effort while Allen accounted for 20 points.
NIU will return to action Saturday, Nov. 26 versus Illinois State in a triple header with the men's basketball team, who is hosting the NIU Thanksgiving Classic. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
