DeKALB – Seven different Huskies scored in double figures, led by 21-point performances by
Cassidy Glenn (New Lenox, Ill./Presbyterian) and
Mikayla Voigt (Slinger, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) as the NIU women's basketball team defeated Lakeland University in its lone exhibition of the season, 111-49.
The Huskies will begin the regular season next Friday, Nov. 11 at Loyola (Chicago).
"There were definitely some stretches where I thought we did good things. We were able to score in bunches and that's something that's going to be a positive for us," said Head Coach
Lisa Carlsen. I did think we had lapses on the defensive that we need to clean up. We were able to play a lot of people as well so this game will be a great teaching tool for us."
Northern Illinois University hit shots with lucrative consistency, draining 13 of their 17 shots in period – a clip of 76.5 percent – to lead 27-11 after one. Glenn led NIU with seven points in the frame, including four points via fast break as NIU outscored the Muskies, 10-0, in transition offense.
Voigt, who accrued six points in the first period, exploded for 12 points during the second quarter to finish the half 8-for-10 from the field with 18 points. While the Huskies shot 23-for-40 in the opening 20 minutes of play, the team dished 15 assists as
Courtney Woods (Brisbane, Australia/St. Margaret's Anglican School) led with five.
The Huskies continued to spread the wealth in the final twenty minutes of play as six more players joined Voigt in double figures, including three reserves. The Muskies tightened shored up their offense as they scored 17 points in the quarter, their game-high. However, NIU added 27 points to increase their lead, 76-39.
After reaching double figures in points in the third quarter,
Kelly Smith (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds to record a double-double.
Eight points in the fourth period by
Janae Poisson (Matteson, Ill./Marian Catholic) lifted the freshman to 15 points in the contest but
Georgia Breunig's (Sauk Prairie, Wis./Sauk Prairie) sharpshooting - a perfect 3-for-3 tally behind the three-point line and 2-for-2 performance at the free-throw line - gave the junior 11 points in the period.
Breunig's first trey of the afternoon lifted the Huskies to 102 points in the contest with 2:32 remaining in regulation as the bench erupted after the basket. The program has not scored 100-or-more points in a regular season, regulation contest since March 2, 1992 when the Huskies defeated Milwaukee, 117-52.
NIU closed the contest with a game-high 35 points in the fourth quarter, running up and down the floor to close the afternoon with 26 assists on their 45 buckets.
"I think we did a good job of sharing the basketball, especially with our first group. I think that's what you're going to see with all the kids returning. They know where everyone's going to be so they did a nice job of moving it and getting the ball to their teammates in areas where they can be successful. The more we play, the better the freshman are going to get at that," added Carlsen.
NIU will open the regular season at Loyola (Chicago) on Friday, November 11. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m., Central at Gentile Arena. The Huskies first home affair will take place Wednesday, Nov. 16 as they host Milwaukee at 7 p.m.
