Kent, Ohio – The NIU women's soccer team (5-10-5, 3-6-2 MAC) will play in their first Mid-American Conference Championship Game since 2006 as they take on Kent State (14-2-2, 8-1-2 MAC) Sunday at noon central.
A win for NIU would be their first MAC Championship since 1998 when Frank Horvat led the team to a 14-7 record with a 9-1 MAC record. Winning the tournament would also clinch an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
The eight-seed Huskies earned their way into the championship game with a win over the one-seed Ball State in penalty kicks in the first round last Sunday and a 3-2 win over the four-seed Western Michigan on Friday.
The Huskies have broken out offensively lately, scoring five goals in their last three games with goals from
Alex Elias (Phoenix, Ariz/Boulder Creek) against Western Michigan last Thursday,
Taylor Sarver (Machesney Park, Ill./Harlem) against Ball State last Sunday, two from
Allie Ingham (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) on Friday and Friday's game-winner from
Kelsey Chope (San Jose, Calif./Leland).
Two-seed Kent State defeated seven-seed Eastern Michigan 2-0 last Sunday and the three-seed Central Michigan 3-1 on Friday. NIU faced Kent State on Sept. 30 and fell 2-0 as the Golden Flashes scored two goals in four minutes in the second half.
The MAC Championship game will stream live on mac-sports.com and kentstatesports.com, the game will also have an audio broadcast on iHeart Radio that will be played along with the video stream.
