Huskies Fall 1-0 To Kent State In Hard Fought MAC Championship Game

Elias, Ingham and Lee named to the All-Tournament Team

KENT, Ohio – The NIU women's soccer team (5-11-5, 3-6-2 MAC) dropped a heartbreaker 1-0 to Kent State (15-2-2, 8-1-2 MAC) in the Mid-American Conference Championship game.

The eight-seed Huskies had three players named to the All-Tournament team as defender Alex Elias (Phoenix, Ariz/Boulder Creek), midfielder Allie Ingham (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) and goalkeeper MacKenzie Lee (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) received the honor.

"The team played outstanding today," Head Coach John Ross said. "We were solid defensively, we created a lot on the attack and that's all we can ask for. The fight that our kids had, the heart, that's great for everyone to see because we've been seeing it all year."

The only goal of the game was scored in the 86th minute as KSU's Kristen Brots found the ball in the six-yard box after a corner kick had been knocked around and Brots fired it past Lee to give the Golden Flashes the lead.

"The ball was in the mix and once it hits the floor, it's a scramble," Ross said. "We had them in a couple of those situations like that, they had us in situations like that and they got that one in."

The game went back and forth throughout most of the game and especially in the second half as the two teams combined for 19 shots in the final 45 minutes with Kent State firing ten and the Huskies getting nine off.

There were a couple of key moments in the first half, the first coming in the 32nd minute as it had looked like Kent State had gotten the first goal of the game on a quick free kick that was played for a player to get a breakaway opportunity past Lee. After much contention from the NIU sideline the goal was disallowed due to an improper restart so the game remained tied at 0-0.

Late in the first half, the Huskies were awarded three-straight corner kicks and got a good shot on net during the third attempt but a Kent State defender was on the goal line to clear the ball away safely.

This ends the season for the Huskies as they finish with a 5-11-5 record and their first MAC tournament runner-up since 2006.
