CHICAGO – The Northern Illinois University women’s tennis team notched its biggest road victory of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating Chicago State 6-1 in the city.

The Huskies (4-3) bolstered their season record with the win at the Chicago State Tennis Courts, taking down the Cougars (0-8) with five wins in singles and the doubles point for insurance. The result marked NIU’s second consecutive road victory after the team had defeated Milwaukee last Saturday.

NIU women’s tennis head coach Tanya Gombera was very pleased with her team’s effort and wants to see the Huskies continue to get better each and every week with Mid-American Conference action closing in.

“I’m proud of the way the team competed in this match,” Gombera said. “I think this was one of our best performances of the season so far, and we look to build on this by continuing to improve.”

Adey Osabuohien (Hazel Crest, Ill./Stony Brook) recorded her seventh straight No. 1 singles win and added a doubles victory with partner Cristina Alvarez (Zaragoza, Spain/Cristorey and Sagrado Corazon de Jesus), who also tallied a nice win at No. 2 singles.

Michelle Eramus (Johannesburg, South Africa/Cal State Fullerton) earned another win for NIU at No. 3 singles, Evelyn Youel (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) cruised to an easy win at No. 5 singles and Meghan Montgomerie (Irvin, Scotland/Beaconhurst) capped the singles scoring for the Huskies by taking the No. 6 singles match by default. Erasmus and Youel also teamed up to earn a No. 2 doubles win for the Huskies, while Abigail Dekkinga (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) and Montgomerie were awarded a default doubles win at No. 3 as well.

With momentum building each week for NIU women’s tennis, the Huskies will return to the city of Chicago next week for another Saturday showdown – this time against UIC at 11 a.m.
