NIU Scholar Athletes of the Week: Feb. 15-21

Feb. 22, 2016 DeKALB, Ill. - Each week, NIU honors two student-athletes that exemplify the concept of the "student-athlete" supremely well. These students excel both in the classroom and on the playing field. This week, the honorees are Joo-Young Lee of men's golf and Emily Naegele of softball.

NIU student-athletes won 10 times during the 2014-15 season, tied for the most in the conference, and have already won five times this year as well.

Week's Achievements:
Joo-Young Lee led the NIU men’s golf team as the Huskies competed at the All-American Intercollegiate over the weekend in Humble, Texas against some of the nation’s top teams. Lee finished tied for 16th in a field of nearly 100 golfers with a 1-over par total of 217 through three rounds. The junior was a model of consistency for the Huskies, recording three rounds in the low 70s, firing 71-72-74 with his ability to record numerous pars in each round on the extremely difficult Golf Club of Houston, which only allowed 13 golfers to go under par in the tournament.

Week's Achievements:
Emily Naegele had a wonderful start to the 2016 softball season, recording a hit in all five games NIU played in and hitting for a weekend cycle with two home runs, one triple, three doubles and two singles in just 14 plate appearances for the Huskies. Posting a .571 batting average over five games, Naegele led NIU in 11 different offensive categories, including total bases with 19 – more than double any other Huskie. She homered in both of her team’s wins over Florida A&M as well. The senior catcher also showed her defensive ability, recording 19 putouts and five assists with two runners caught stealing.
