NIU Scholar Athletes of the Week: Feb. 22-29

Feb. 29, 2016 DeKALB, Ill. - Each week, NIU honors two student-athletes that exemplify the concept of the "student-athlete" supremely well. These students excel both in the classroom and on the playing field. This week, the honorees are Justin Fletcher of baseball and Emily Naegele of softball.

NIU student-athletes won 10 times during the 2014-15 season, tied for the most in the conference, and have already won five times this year as well.

Week's Achievements:
Justin Fletcher had an unbelievable weekend for the NIU baseball team, going 14-for-17 at the plate against Murray State for a four-game batting average of .824 with six doubles, one triple, eight runs scored and seven runs batted in. The senior centerfielder was a big reason the Huskies scored 44 runs over the weekend, with Fletcher posting an incredible on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS) of 2.112 as he reached base in 18 of 22 plate appearances, including in his first nine at-bats.
 Week's Achievements:
Emily Naegele continued her strong start to the 2016 season, going 9-for-12 for a batting average of .750 and reaching base in 15-of-19 plate appearances for an on-base percentage of .789 as the NIU softball team won four out of five games at the Grand Canyon Tournament. Naegele hit for the weekend cycle for the second straight weekend, tallying two home runs, one triple, three doubles and three singles with eight runs batted in and seven runs scored while starting all five contests.
