ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University women’s tennis team was narrowly beaten by Cleveland State, 4-3, on Saturday at the Boylan Tennis Center in Rockford, Ill.
The Huskies (2-3) earned three singles victories but were edged out by the Vikings (1-3) for the doubles point at the beginning of the match, which ultimately proved decisive for both teams.
Adey Osabuohien (Hazel Crest, Ill./Stony Brook), Michelle Erasmus (Johannesburg, South Africa/Cal State Fullerton) and Evelyn Youel (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) all came through with individual singles wins for NIU on Saturday, with Erasmus’ fighting back from a set down to earn her win. However, NIU women’s tennis coach Tanya Gombera and the Huskies were unable to secure the fourth team point necessary to earn the team victory in the best-of-seven collegiate tennis format.
“For the second straight week, it was another hard-fought match, but we were unable to get that crucial fourth team point,” Coach Gombera said. “We’ll work hard in the coming week to prepare for Milwaukee with the hope of coming through in that match.”
Cristina Alvarez (Zaragoza, Spain/Cristorey and Sagrado Corazon de Jesus) picked up her 99th career victory for NIU with a doubles triumph with her partner, Osabuohien, leaving the Huskie senior needing just one more win to become the 13th member of the 100-win club in NIU women’s tennis history.
Looking to make history and return to winning ways, Alvarez and the rest of the Huskies will compete again next Saturday with a match at Milwaukee at 12:30 p.m. CT.
