NIU Scholar Athletes of the Week: Feb. 1-7

Feb. 8, 2016 DeKALB, Ill. - Each week, NIU honors two student-athletes that exemplify the concept of the "student-athlete" supremely well. These students excel both in the classroom and on the playing field. This week, the honorees are Tom Hjertonsson of men's tennis and Kelsey Hildreth of track & field.

NIU student-athletes won 10 times during the 2014-15 season, tied for the most in the conference, and have already won four times this year as well.

Week's Achievements:
Tom Hjertonsson continued his very strong start to the 2016 spring season with a perfect 6-0 weekend for the NIU men’s tennis team. The sophomore emerged victorious in each of his three No. 3 singles matches as the Huskies went 2-1 as a team against St. Louis, Southern Illinois and Chicago State. Hjertonsson also combined with his doubles partners to earn three more wins.

 Week's Achievements:
Returning from a lengthy injury absence, Kelsey Hildreth lifted an already surging NIU track & field team by showing that she can immediately compete at her best as the super sophomore distance runner posted a top-10 finish at the prestigious Meyo Invitational on Saturday. Competing against a nationally stacked field, Hildreth finished eighth with a time of 17:01.56 in the 5,000 meters.
