NIU Scholar Athletes of the Week: March 14-20

March 21, 2016 DeKALB, Ill. - Each week, NIU honors two student-athletes that exemplify the concept of the "student-athlete" supremely well. These students excel both in the classroom and on the playing field. This week, the honorees are Joo-Young Lee of men's golf and Kali Kossakowski of softball.

NIU student-athletes won 10 times during the 2014-15 season, tied for the most in the conference, and have already won seven times this year as well.

Week's Achievements:
Joo-Young Lee shot the lowest round in NIU men’s golf history – breaking a 38-year-old record – and went on to win the Desert Shootout over the weekend in Arizona. The junior posted a school-record round of 65 (7-under) thanks to an incredible nine birdies during Friday’s opening 18 holes, and Lee added rounds of 69 and 68 to finish the tournament at 14-under par, tying with Antoine Rozner of UMKC for the tournament win. Lee was NIU’s first medalist in a men’s golf tournament since April 2013.
 Week's Achievements:
Kali Kossakowski played a huge role in the NIU softball team’s perfect weekend at the UNC-Greensboro Blue/Gold Challenge, which stretched the Huskies’ winning streak to 11 games. Setting the tone from the lead-off spot, Kossakowski scored in all five victories and finished the weekend with eight runs scored, two singles, one triple and one stolen base. The junior also walked six times and was hit by a pitch once, helping her accumulate an on-base percentage of .526 by reaching in 11-of-19 plate appearances.
