NIU Scholar Athletes of the Week: March 21-27

March 28, 2016 DeKALB, Ill. - Each week, NIU honors two student-athletes that exemplify the concept of the "student-athlete" supremely well. These students excel both in the classroom and on the playing field. This week, the honorees are Brandon Mallder of baseball and Kayti Grable of softball.

NIU student-athletes won 10 times during the 2014-15 season, tied for the most in the conference, and have already won seven times this year as well.

He scored what would be in the winning run in the fourth inning of a 2-0 victory on Friday and also tallied a key insurance run in the eighth inning of Sunday’s 3-1 victory. The versatile junior led the Huskies with a .333 batting average for the weekend with three hits and two walks, reaching base in 5-of-11 at-bats. He also had a perfect series in the field at multiple positions with 15 put-outs and three assists.

Week's Achievements:

She batted .625 and slugged 1.750, going 5-for-8, including three home runs, with nine RBIs and five runs scored in the series. The junior catcher helped NIU extend its season-long winning streak to 14 games, second best in school history. Grable hit a home run in each of the three games with the Falcons, including her first career grand slam. She went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored in the 8-0 five-inning series opener She was 1-for-2 in game two with her lone hit being a grand slam in the second inning of a 13-1 triumph.
