ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University women’s tennis team posted one of its biggest victories of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating Green Bay by a 6-1 margin at the Boylan Tennis Center in Rockford, Ill.

The Huskies (5-4) now have a winning record again this season after a dominating win over the Phoenix (0-7) as NIU recorded its fourth 6-1 victory of the 2016 spring season, matching previous triumphs over North Dakota, Lewis and Chicago State.

NIU women’s tennis head coach Tanya Gombera thought some changes to her lineup made a big difference in what was the Huskies’ first victory over Green Bay since the teams last met in 2010.

“We were very happy with our overall performance in this dual against Green Bay. We tried new doubles combinations, and that certainly worked well for the team,” Gombera said. “We are now looking forward to another great week of practice as we hope to see more improvement in our next matchup against Drake.”

Leading NIU again was Adey Osabuohien (Hazel Crest, Ill./Stony Brook) with her eighth consecutive singles victory, which she earned in straight sets over Olivia Headford. Osabuohien also teamed up with Evelyn Youel (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) for a key doubles win without dropping a game, while Youel added to that with a hard-fought win at No. 5 singles over Maria Neff.

In fact, the Huskies didn’t lose a single game in completed doubles matches after Coach Gombera’s alterations. New tandem Cristina Alvarez (Zaragoza, Spain/Cristorey and Sagrado Corazon de Jesus) and Meghan Montgomerie (Irvin, Scotland/Beaconhurst) – both of whom also earned singles victories – teamed up for a 6-0 victory in the No. 3 singles slot to clinch the doubles point for NIU.

Abigail Dekkinga (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) continued the trend of Huskie dominance over the Phoenix on Saturday, defeating her singles opponent Jule-Sophie Hermann by a 6-0, 6-0 scoreline, as NIU earned team points with wins in five of the six singles contests.

NIU women’s tennis returns to the road next weekend for a Saturday morning showdown with Drake. The Huskies will take head to Des Moines, Iowa for a matchup with the Bulldogs at 10 a.m. CT on the morning of March 12th.
