Three NIU Teams Receive NCAA APR Awards

April 13, 2016 DeKALB, Ill. – For the second consecutive year, a school-record three Northern Illinois University teams have received the APR Public Recognition Award as the NCAA announced the 2014-15 teams Wednesday.  The NIU men’s tennis, women’s tennis and women’s gymnastics teams all posted multi-year Academic Progress Rates (APR) that ranked in the top 10 percent of programs in their sports to earn the award.

The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams nationally.  The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each term to provide a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2011-2012, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years.

During that time, NIU’s three teams honored today all received perfect APR scores of 1000 meaning every student-athlete who came to NIU during those years stayed and graduated.  It’s an achievement not to be taken lightly, said NIU Associate Vice-President and Director of Athletics Sean T. Frazier.

“To have three Huskie teams honored again this year for the successful retention and graduation of student-athletes is outstanding,” Frazier said. “Congratulations to the student-athletes and coaches of our men’s and women’s tennis and women’s gymnastics teams on their APR Public Recognition Awards for 2014-15. These awards are another indication of our entire department’s commitment to NIU student-athletes and ensuring they reach the ultimate goal of earning an NIU degree.”

The NIU women’s gymnastics team, under the leadership of Head Coach Sam Morreale, earned an APR Public Recognition Award for a school-record fourth time, including for the third consecutive year.  Men’s tennis, the reigning Mid-American Conference regular season champions, made it back-to-back years on the Public Recognition list for Head Coach Patrick Fisher.  Women’s tennis, meanwhile, became the ninth different NIU program to receive a Public Recognition Award in the 11-year history of the award with their first honor under Head Coach Tanya Gombera.

All-time, NIU teams have received 17 APR Public Recognition Awards in the 11 years of the program and at least one team has been honored in 10 years. Women’s gymnastics leads the way with honors in four years, followed by women’s golf, which has been publicly recognized for its APR three times.

The three Huskie teams were among 20 Mid-American Conference teams to earn a Public Recognition Award this year; NIU’s three teams on the list ranked tied for the second in the MAC behind only Kent State. The NIU women’s tennis team was the only MAC women’s tennis program to earn an APR Public Recognition Award this year.

All Division I teams’ APR scores will be released April 20.
