NIU Scholar Athletes of the Week: April 11-17

April 18, 2016 DeKALB, Ill. - Each week, NIU honors two student-athletes that exemplify the concept of the "student-athlete" supremely well. These students excel both in the classroom and on the playing field. This week, the honorees are Brandon Mallder of baseball and Carly Pederson of track & field.

These Huskies have been nominated for the MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week awards, which NIU student-athletes won 10 times during the 2014-15 season, tied for the most in the conference, and have already won seven times this year as well.

The junior was a single machine for the Huskies, with all seven of his hits in 14 at-bats coming via the base knock. Mallder, who tallied six runs scored, five runs batted in, one stole base and a perfect field percentage for the week, also walked five times over the four games, finishing with an on-base percentage of .632 last week.

Week's Achievements:
Carly Pederson continued her remarkable improvement this season as a distance runner for the NIU track & field team with a top-30 finish at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays in the 5,000 meters. Pederson, who has been setting personal records in numerous events all season and was one of just a few Huskies to compete at Mt. SAC near Los Angeles, bettered her previous best in the event by almost 30 seconds as the junior runner crossed the line in 17:46.82.
