NIU Defeated by Miami on Friday in DeKalb

April 22, 2016

DeKALB, Ill – The Northern Illinois University women’s tennis team faced one of the best teams in the Mid-American Conference on Friday afternoon in league action, losing to Miami 7-0 on a sunny spring day in DeKalb at the NIU Tennis Courts.

The Huskies (6-13, 1-6 MAC) were unable to end the five-match league winning streak the RedHawks (11-9, 6-1 MAC) brought to DeKalb, with perennial conference power Miami winning every match to complete the 7-0 decision.

NIU women’s tennis head coach Tanya Gombera already has her team looking forward to Sunday’s season finale, which will also serve as Senior Day for the lone Huskie senior, Cristina Alvarez (Zaragoza, Spain/Cristorey and Sagrado Corazon de Jesus).

“We’re excited for the opportunity to finish at home on Sunday against Eastern Michigan, and we’ll be aiming to close out with a team victory that can be a momentum boost heading into next season,” Coach Gombera said. “Cristina has accomplished so much during her time at NIU, and we will honor her tremendous career before our match on Sunday.”

The Huskies will face the Eagles on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT at the NIU Tennis Court, weather permitting.

For fans wanting to see Alvarez, the 13th member of the NIU women’s tennis 100 career wins club, and the Huskies, admission is FREE to all for the final match of the spring 2016 campaign.
