NIU Scholar Athletes of the Week: April 25-May 1

May 2, 2016 DeKALB, Ill. - Each week, NIU honors two student-athletes that exemplify the concept of the "student-athlete" supremely well. These students excel both in the classroom and on the playing field. This week, the honorees are Joo-Young Lee of men's golf and Kelsey Hildreth of track.

These Huskies have been nominated for the MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week awards, which NIU student-athletes won 10 times during the 2014-15 season, tied for the most in the conference, and have already won eight times this year as well.

Week's Achievements:
Joo-Young Lee achieved the highest finish by any NIU men’s golf at the MAC Championships since 1983 when he placed second last weekend at the conference championships to help the Huskies take fourth as a team. Lee led for much of the tournament, spurred on by his hole-in-one on the par 3 eighth hole in the opening round. Lee shot a 4-under round of 67 in the second round and was in the lead for much of the final round before finishing in second place individually with a total score of 287 (+3).

Week's Achievements:
Kelsey Hildreth obliterated the NIU school record in the outdoor 5,000 meters by almost 18 seconds with her best performance of the season on Thursday evening at the Drake Relays. The sophomore led most of the race against some of the best distance runners in the nation and eventually finished third with a record-setting time of 16:30.04, which topped the previous school record that she owned by a wide margin. Hildreth’s run also moved her up into third on the MAC performance list in the event ahead of the upcoming conference championships.
