Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Gritty Huskies Fall to No. 23 Wildcats, 2-0

NIU put two shots on frame but were unable to equalize

TUCSON, Ariz. – The NIU women's soccer team (1-3-1) battled in the desert against No. 23 Arizona (4-1-1) Friday night, creating chances for itself on the counter attack. Unable to equalize however, the Wildcats would take the match and added an 81st minute goal to defeat the Huskies, 2-0.

"I thought we played very well and that we played hard. Up until (the second goal) we were doing well controlling what they wanted to do," said Head Coach John Ross. "Once they got in the box, we defended the box really well and created some good counter opportunities against a quality team.

"We're happy with the effort but I think our girls wanted more out of the match and they played well. We were looking for them to be hungry and we did that. The opportunity and ability to get a win against quality teams like this is there."

The nationally ranked Wildcats went on the scoreboard early as Paige Crouch punched one in just as the second minute of the match passed.

NIU settled in shortly thereafter, absorbing the pressure that Arizona threw its way and mobilized on the counter attack with five shots, including two on goal.

The Huskies went down to 10-players in the match in the 81st, setting up a penalty kick for Gabi Stojan, who knocked it home to extend the lead, 2-0.

Northern Illinois University will close out the Cats Classic on Sunday, taking on Arizona State at Mulcahy Stadium at noon Central. The match will stream live on the Pac-12 Network.
