Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Glenn’s and Wood’s Double-Doubles Power Huskies Past Miami, 89-76

Cassidy Glenn closed the game with 32 points and 13 boards, both career-highs

DeKALB - With double-doubles from Cassidy Glen (New Lenox, Ill./Providence Catholic/Presbyterian) and Courtney Woods (St. Margaret's Anglican School), the NIU women's basketball team powered past Miami (Ohio) on Saturday after, 89-76. The Huskies led from start to finish as Glenn recorded new career-bests with 32 points and 13 rebounds while Woods added 21 points and 11 boards.

Mikayla Voigt (Slinger, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) added 16 points with a lethal 5-for-7 clip from the field with a perfect 4-for-4 three-point field goal mark. As a team, NIU was 22-for-26 (.846) from the free-throw line, led by Glenn's 10-for-13 performance.

Runs were vital to Northern Illinois University's success as it started the game on an 18-4 run, including a run of 10-straight points to open the afternoon. It was one of four runs for NIU, holding Miami scoreless while scoring 8-or-more points.

"We came out with a high-intensity and that really set the tone for the rest of the day. We knew that was going to be a key for us today," said Head Coach Lisa Carlsen.

Glenn opened the game with 12 of the Huskies 22 points in the opening stanza, hitting her first of four "and one" field goal attempts in the game as well during the quarter. 12 of the senior's points were scored in the paint.

"If you look at Cass' stat line for tonight, she was 0-for-4 from three, and a lot of the times that's a big part of her game," added Carlsen. "What we can all be the proudest about is that even though the three wasn't falling, there were going to be other great opportunities offensively and I thought she did a good job of getting to the basket and getting to the offensive glass."

With Miami focusing on Glenn in the second period, Woods spotted up behind the arc as she shot 4-for-5 from deep to end the quarter with 12 points, putting the Huskies on top of the RedHawks, 44-35.

NIU's defense collected itself after the break, holding Miami University to just 12 points on 6-of-14 shooting and causing eight turnovers in the quarter. As a result, the Huskies outscored the RedHawks in points off turnovers, 11-0.

With a 20-point edge entering the final quarter thanks to a pair of free throws by Ally Lehman (Nineveh, Ind./Indian Creek), the Huskies finished the job as Voigt scored nine points in the quarter - all from behind the three-point line - to keep NIU within its 22 points per quarter quota in the contest.

While the RedHawks outshot the Huskies by three percentage points and outrebounded them by one (37-36), NIU still held scoring advantages in the paint (34-30), off turnovers (27-14) and off second chance opportunities (16-8).

Northern Illinois University will close its three-game homestand on Wednesday night when it hosts Kent State at the NIU Convocation Center. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. Central. The game will air live on ESPN3.
