DEKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University women's tennis team is looking to build on last weekend's sweep when it plays host to Illinois State Saturday.
NIU (5-2) will play host to the Redbirds at the Boylan Tennis Center in Rockford tomorrow at 1 p.m.
The Huskies went a perfect 4-0 last weekend, including shutout victories over Green Bay and Western Illinois. NIU head coach
Tanya Mahefu's goal in scheduling so many matches last weekend was to get her young team some valuable match playing time. She was pleased with how the team responded.
"I'm really proud of the girls and the way they played this past weekend," Mahefu said. "They showed a lot of fight and determination. I was happy with the way we competed as a team and I am excited to see how we will do this weekend against Illinois State.
The weekend paid off in more than just wins for the Huskies. Freshman
Raven Neely (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Point South) picked up MAC Singles Player of the Week, and along with Adey Osabuohein (Hazel Crest, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor), garnered doubles team of the week honors from the league for the second time season.
