DEKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University women's tennis team looks to extend its winning streak to six when it travels to Southern Illinois-Edwardsville Saturday.
The Huskies (6-2) enters Saturday's match with the Cougars having won five in a row, including six of their last seven matches.
"We've been working well as a team and being supportive of each other," said NIU head coach
Tanya Mahefu. "Everybody's willing to fight for each other. Our practices have been great, the girls have been working hard and really good buying into everything we've been telling them in practice."
Two weeks ago, Mahefu scheduled four matches in three days, with the goal of getting her young team some valuable match playing time. It had paid of quite well. Not only did NIU go 4-0 that weekend, the Huskies earned a hard-fought victory over Illinois State this past weekend.
"I think that weekend really helped them get some confidence, get some matches under their belts," she said. "We go to Southern Illinois-Edwardsville for a tough road match. With those four matches we had that weekend and last week, I think our girls feel confident going in and competing against anybody at this point."
SIUE is undefeated on the season with a 5-0 record. The Huskies and Cougars have faced a common opponent this season. SIUE defeated Illinois State, 6-1, while the Huskies beat the Redbirds, 5-2, last weekend.
Saturday's match with the Cougars will begin at 4:30 p.m. and there will be live scoring available for the contest.
