EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University women's tennis team suffered a 4-3 setback to SIUE at the Edwardsville Y Saturday.
"It was a tough loss for the team," said NIU head coach
Tanya Mahefu. "It was a seesaw match. We had our opportunities to clinch the match but were unsuccessful. We continue to keep working on things that make us better as a team and hopefully bounce back next week against Marquette."
The Huskies (6-3) won the doubles' point as
Meghan Montgomerie (Irvine, Scotland/Beaconhurst) and
Evelyn Youel (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) and
Abbie-Jade Riley (Wolverhampton, Egland/Hagley Catholic) and
Abigail Dekkinga (Allegan, Mich./Allegan Senior) won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, respectively.
Adey Osabuohien (Hazel Crest, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) and
Raven Neely (Grosse Point, Mich./Grosse Point South) suffered their first doubles loss of season, falling, 6-4
Osabuohien and
Brodie Walker (Bristol, England/Bristol Grammar School) picked up victories at No. 1 and No. 4 singles, respectively, in three sets. Osabuohien defeated Mia Frogner, 6-4, 6-7, 7-6. Walker lost the first set to Lara Tupper, 3-6, but rallied to win the next two sets, 7-5, 6-4. Riley battled at No. 6 singles, however, lost her match, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
The NIU women's tennis team returns to action Saturday when the Huskies travel to Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. The match begins at 4:30 p.m.
