Huskies Pull Out Late Rally To Come Away With Eight-Inning Tie

Pinch hit two-out, two-RBI single from Carl Russell ties game in eighth

Phoenix, Ariz. – The NIU baseball team finished their last game in Arizona Sunday with a 6-6 tie against Chicago State in eight innings after heavy rains came in bottom of the eighth.

"You never like ending in a tie but we saw a lot of good things today and we actually played HuskieBall," Head Coach Mike Kunigonis said. "This was a positive day and we need to build on this into next week."

The Huskies came back from a five run deficit after the fourth inning, scoring one in the fifth, three in the sixth and two in the eighth. The tying runs came off the bat of senior Carl Russell with the bases loaded and two outs as he slapped a single through the right side as a pinch hitter.

NIU had two, three-hit performances from juniors Brad Wood and Jesus Tovar with both combining to score three runs and Tovar adding an RBI. Junior catcher Michael Roberson added a two-out, two RBI double in the sixth to bring the Huskies within a run.

Donovin Sims got the start on the mound for the Huskies and went four innings, giving up five runs with only three being earned. The NIU bullpen kept them in the game as Jon Savarise entered in the fifth and threw two and one-third innings giving up one run and striking out two.

"It was great to see out bullpen step up for us," Kunigonis said. "Our offense never gave up and grinded out six runs today."

Aaron Rumfield and Andrew Frankenreider were the other two Huskies out of the pen and they combined to get five outs in the seventh and eighth innings. Frankenreider returned to the mound for live, game action for the first time in over a year after he missed all of the 2016 season with an arm injury.

NIU finished a rainy weekend in Arizona going 0-2-1 after dropping both games on Friday.

"We will go into the next week looking to clean things up overall and tighten up our defense," Kunigonis said. "Can't wait to get back at it next week."

NIU and Chicago State have tentatively scheduled a make-up game at Chicago State on Wednesday since both teams had one game rained out each and with good weather expected in Chicago.
