YPSILANTI, Mich. – Draining 10 treys in the final three quarters with four scorers registering 15-or-more points, the NIU women's basketball team (19-8, 12-4 MAC) won its 12th Mid-American Conference game of the season Saturday to set a new program standard for MAC wins in a 81-71 triumph at Eastern Michigan (6-22, 1-15 MAC).
With a career-tying mark of six three-pointers in the game,
Courtney Woods (Brisbane, Australia/St. Margaret's Anglican School) led the NIU offense with 22 points while
Kelly Smith (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) recorded her first double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
"I thought there were spurts where we played good basketball. Obviously Courtney shot the ball well and that was big for us," said Head Coach
Lisa Carlsen. "We did just enough and I think that this was one of those games that we'll go back and watch and continue to clean things up.
Eight unanswered points to open the game set the tone for the Huskies in the first, who opened the game on a 15-4 scoring run to lead 18-8 in the first 10 minutes as Smith paved the way with her seven points.
Northern Illinois built an 18-point in the second stanza as it hit four of their eight three-point attempts in the period, however, the Eagles 29-21 edge rebounding closed the gap to 12 at halftime, 37-25. Defensively, the Huskies forced 13 turnovers in the opening half with six steals as well.
Smith and Woods paced Northern Illinois University through two quarters with 12 and 10 points, respectively, as Smith also contributed eight boards.
Despite its best effort to match each NIU shot in the second half, Eastern Michigan was outscored in the first three quarters of play, but finished with a three-point edge in the fourth frame, 28-25.
Northern Illinois University led the game from start to finish and took a 19-point lead in the fourth quarter with five minutes left in the frame.
Ally Lehman (Nineveh, Ind./Indian Creek), who tallied five points, five rebounds and three assists in the second half, recorded 11 points in the second half to close the afternoon with 16 points and eight rebounds.
Her six assists also paced NIU on the night and put her one helper shy of tying Stephanie Raymond (2003-07) for No. 2 all-time in the NIU annals. Lehman has 496 assists in her career.
The Huskies will honor seniors
Cassidy Glenn,
Amber Gray and Lehman on Wednesday night when they take on Toledo at the NIU Convocation Center. Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m. Central. The game will air live on American Sports Network and on ESPN3.
