OXFORD, Ohio – The Northern Illinois University Women's Tennis team suffered a 6-1 loss in the Mid-American Conference opener at Miami at the Miami Tennis Courts Friday afternoon.
The Huskies' (6-9, 0-1) posted victories at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles.
Adey Osabuohien (Hazel Crest, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) and
Raven Neely (Grosse Point, Mich./Grosse Point South) scored a 6-4 victory over Nelli Ponomareva and Anzhelika Shapovalova. Unfortunately for NIU, it would noty win the doubles' point.
Osabouhien scored the lone victory on the day for the Huskies. The Huskie senior posted a 6-7, 6-0, 10-8 victory over Ponomareva.
Pauline Chawafambira (Dangamvura, Mutare, Zimbabwe) batted at No. 3 singles, but fell, 12-10 in the third set to Andreea Badileanu.
"We played very tight today," said NIU head coach
Tanya Mahefu. "We had opportunities to be successful, but let our nerves get the best of us. I am hoping we can learn from this and do better Sunday."
The NIU women's tennis team returns to the court Sunday when the Huskies play host Ball State at the Boylan Tennis Center in Rockford. The match begins at 1 p.m. CT
