NIU Bats Go Cold In 6-1 Loss To UIC

Huskies prepare to continue conference play in home opener Friday

CHICAGO, Ill. – The NIU baseball team (7-17, 3-0 MAC) lost their midweek matchup against UIC 6-1 on Tuesday, scoring their only run of the game in the ninth inning.

"Today was a disappointing day for us, especially after sweeping last weekend," Head Coach Mike Kunigonis said.

The Huskies scored one run on eight hits and made two errors on the day after scoring 32 runs in three games against Toledo. Six of the eight hits came from three players in the lineup, Joe Jumonville, Samuel Vega and Jason Gasser, who came off of the bench to go 2-2.

NIU threw seven pitchers in total over the eight innings the Huskies played on defense against the Flames. Starter Andrew Frankenreider was the only pitcher to pitch more than an inning, going two shutout innings allowing two hits, two walks and striking out two batters.

The Flames scored three runs in the third innings off of Jon Savarise, who took the loss. Savarise only gave up one earned run but walked three batters and hit another to put himself in a jam and allowing three runners to cross the plate in the third.

"We need to bounce back and be ready for the weekend," Kunigonis said. "We will be back at it with a good, hard practice tomorrow to get ready for Friday."

The Huskies will head back to DeKalb in preparation of their first home series of the 2017 season as they welcome Bowling Green to Ralph McKinzie field for a three-game series starting on Friday. Friday's game is scheduled for a 3:05 p.m. CT first pitch, Saturday is slated for a 1:05 p.m. start and Sunday will start at 12:05 p.m., all times subject to change. Schedule updates will be made on Twitter @NIU_Baseball and on niuhuskies.com if necessary.
