Huskies Outhit Cougars But SIUE Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader

Jumonville and Wood each homer in game two, Huskies defense turns triple play in game one

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The NIU baseball team dropped both ends of their Saturday doubleheader to SIU-Edwardsville. Game one was a 5-3 Cougars' win and game two finished with a final score of 9-7 as the Huskies had more hits in each game, outhitting SIUE 14-12 in game two and 9-7 in game one.

"We battled all day but the simple fact is we didn't play defense and the scoreboard showed it today," Head Coach Mike Kunigonis said.

In the second game, the Huskies' offense had two big innings, with a couple of long balls in the fourth inning as Joe Jumonville led off with a solo shot and Brad Wood left the yard for a three-run homer. NIU landed the first punch of the game, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning with a bases loaded hit by pitch from Carl Russell then Jumonville cracked a single into center to score two more.

SIUE climbed back into the game, scoring one run in each of the first three innings to tie the game at three before NIU's four-run fourth. The Cougars answered with a  four-run fourth of their own as they scored three unearned off of Nathan Thomas, capped off by a two-run home run by Brock Weimer.

The Cougars took the lead in the seventh with a two-out, two-RBI single by Alec Skender off of Ryne Blanton. The Huskies attempted to mount a comeback in the eighth but couldn't manufacture runs after the first two hitters got on base.

The first game was lower scoring but SIUE scored the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the first on a single by Jared McCunn. Later in the first SIUE lined a shot to Wood at second who caught the ball for the first out, beat the runner on second for the second out and threw the ball over to Tommy Hook at first to beat that runner to the bag for the third out for a triple play.

The Huskies tied the score at two in the fifth after Roderick Bynum doubled, Jacob Dunham double Bynum home and Hook lined an RBI single into right field before getting thrown out at second trying to advance on the throw. SIUE ended up taking the lead back in the bottom of the fifth after a couple of errors and a two-run home run by Keaton Wright.

"This group doesn't give up and fights to the very end," Kunigonis said. "We just need to learn to win and find a way to get it done."

NIU tried to get back into the game after a Bynum triple and a Dunham RBI groundout but that's all they could muster in the ninth. The Huskies and Cougars will get back at it for the series finale tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. CT.
