DEKALB – The NIU baseball team (9-23, 5-4 MAC) dropped their midweek game to UIC (21-8, 10-2 Horizon) 17-3 on Tuesday afternoon. Every inning the Flames scored in saw more than one run come to the plate as they also had two five-run innings.
NIU senior RHP
Danny Hyde had his best performance of the season, pitching three innings in relief giving up no hits and no runs with one strikeout. Catcher
Mike Roberson also had a standout day in the Huskie loss, going 3-4 with an RBI and throwing out a potential base stealer. Junior outfielder
Joe Jumonville also had a good day at the plate, going 2-3 with an RBI.
The two five-run innings for UIC came in the second and eighth innings that saw UIC catcher Tom Calabrese hit three-run home runs in each. Calabrese ended the day with eight RBIs, was a triple away from the cycle and helped record all three outs in an unconventional triple play.
On the play,
Brad Wood struck out swinging,
Jason Gasser was thrown out by Calabrese trying to steal second and Roberson was tagged out by Calabrese at the plate while trying to score on the throw to second base.
"We need to forget about this game and get ready for the weekend series against Kent State," Head Coach
Mike Kunigonis said. "We did see some solid things today from individuals that we will look to build on."
The Huskies will remain in DeKalb this weekend for a three-game series against Kent State at Ralph McKinzie Field. Game dates and times are subject to change based on weather so keep an eye on niuhuskies.com and on Twitter @NIU_Baseball for potential schedule updates.
