DEKALB – The NIU baseball team (13-28, 7-7 MAC) split their Friday doubleheader against Ball State (22-21, 9-8 MAC) as the Cardinals won game one 4-1 and the Huskies won game two 6-3.
"This is a typical MAC series," Head Coach
Mike Kunigonis said. "Two hard fought games knotted at one game apiece going into game three."
In game two, Ball State jumped out to two early leads, first in the second inning scoring a run after getting a couple of breaks on ground balls with a bad hop for a single and an error to help a runner get to third before an RBI ground out. After NIU tied the game in the bottom of the second, the Cardinals took the lead again in the third with back-to-back singles to leadoff the inning, a sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly to take a 2-1 lead.
The Huskies' bats broke out in the fifth as
Jason Gasser got his second hit of the game with a bunt single,
Brad Wood walked then
Tommy Hook crushed a three-run home run to right field to take a 4-2 lead. Hook had been seeing the ball well all day as he had a hit and two other balls hit very well out to deep right.
Tommy Szczasny hammered a home run to right as well for a solo shot as the next batter for NIU's second back-to-back home runs of the season.
Then with a 5-2 lead, the Huskies went to
George Faue in relief of
Nathan Thomas and Faue faced retired 12 of 13 batters he faced through four innings with three strikeouts to earn his second save of the year. Thomas went five innings giving up two earned runs on four hits and a walk while striking out three.
"Our staff was fantastic today," Kunigonis said. "Nate and George were awesome in the second game and Hawks deserved better than he got in game one but he battled and gave us a chance to win game one."
Senior righty
Joe Hawks went seven innings in NIU's game one loss, giving up four runs, three earned, on eight hits and four walks with four strikeouts. The NIU offense was only able to push across one run in the series opener on a double by Wood that scored
Mike Roberson from first in the second inning.
These same two teams will attempt to play the third game of their series tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. CT at Ralph McKinzie Field. There is an expected gap in predicted rain showers at that time but keep an eye on Twitter @NIU_Baseball for the latest game time updates.
