DEKALB – The NIU women's soccer team (2-1-1) heads to Green Bay to take on the Phoenix (0-5) Sunday at 1 p.m. CT at Aldo Santaga Stadium. The Huskies are coming off of their 2-1 overtime win at UIC on Wednesday that saw
Natalia Pena (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) and
Taylor Sarver (Machesney Park, Ill./Harlem) score their first goals of the season.
Green Bay has dropped all five of their matches with their most recent matching coming this Friday against Indiana State where they fell 2-0. The Phoenix have not scored a goal during the regular season and also have a loss against a fellow Mid-American Conference team in Akron on Aug. 20.
In their win against UIC, the Huskies got two more assists from redshirt junior
Lauren Gierman (Prospect Heights, Ill./John Hersey) giving her an assist on all three NIU goals this season. Three assists ties her career high for a season matching her total from the 2015 season in just four games.
The depth of the NIU offensive attack has shown early on as three different players have scored the three goals with Sarver getting her first after her seven-goal season in 2016 and two defenders scoring on corner kicks in Pena and
Delaney Loprieno (Algonquin, Ill./Huntley).
After back-to-back shutouts to start 2017, the Huskies have given up goals in their previous two matches in their 2-0 loss to Wisconsin and the 2-1 victory against UIC. In those two matches NIU did keep their opponents off the board through the first 45 minutes but gave up goals in each second half.
NIU women's soccer will return home after three-straight road matches to take on Milwaukee next Friday at the NIU Soccer and Track & Field at 5 p.m. CT.
