DEKALB, Ill. – Jaime Colin scored the lone goal in the 29th minute as Milwaukee regained the LeWang Trophy with a 1-0 victory over the Northern Illinois University men's soccer team on Wednesday night at the NIU Soccer Complex. Sophomore goalkeeper
Konrad Dziedzic (Schiller Park, Ill./East Leyden) made five saves in goal for the Huskies.
"It was a very disappointing performance," said NIU head coach
Ryan Swan. "We know this game is a bit of a rivalry, playing for the LeWang Trophy, and when there is hardware on the line, typically it adds a little spice to the game.
"We played two tough games in Utah over the weekend and I don't know if the legs were heavy, but something was missing today, we didn't quite get the performance we have had. I don't think we had the desire we have had the last few weeks."
The contest sprung to life in the 13th minute as Dziedzic was called upon for the first time, making a save on a shot from Sean Reynolds. NIU (3-5) went immediately on the counterattack following the Milwaukee chance as sophomore
Jan Maertins (Rheinfelden, Germany/Georg-Buechner Gym) connected with junior
Kevin Rodriguez (Pasadena, Texas/Deer Park) and his shot went just wide of the far post.
In the 22nd minute, Dziedzic made another save as Milwaukee's Evan Conway was alone as the back post but couldn't beat the Huskies goalkeeper from a tight angle.
The Panthers broke the deadlock seven minute later as Colin was given time to dribble toward the top of the box and whistle a shot into the upper corner past a diving Dziedzic to give Milwaukee a 1-0 lead, an advantage they would take into halftime.
NIU's first chance after the interval came in the 60th minute as junior
Max Voss (Herten, Germany/Staedtisches Gymnasium Herten) got on the end of a cross but fired a shot high and wide.
With the Huskies needing to push for an equalizer, Milwaukee (3-3-2) had a number of chances in the final 20 minutes. Nick Moon flashed a header just wide off a corner kick in the 70th minute.
A turnover in midfield left Dziedzic one-on-one with Moon in the 77th minute but Dziedzic made a fantastic save to keep the Huskies within a goal. In the 85th minute, Reid Stevenson hit the post for the Panthers.
NIU's last chance came in the 88th minute as the ball popped loose to junior
Adrian Coardos (Evanston, Ill./Niles North) near the edge of the box but his shot hit a defender on its way toward goal as Milwaukee preserved the 1-0 victory and took the LeWang Trophy back north.
Freddy Lorenzen made two saves in goal for the Panthers.
NIU will return to action next Tuesday, Sept. 26, when the Huskies travel to UIC. Game time against the Flames is slated for 7 p.m.
