DEKALB – The NIU women's soccer team (5-4-1, 2-1 MAC) fell to Toledo (5-4-2, 2-0-1 MAC) 2-1 in double overtime Friday night. It was the Huskies' first loss in Mid-American Conference play and the first time the dropped a match that went into overtime after earning a win and a draw in their first two overtime games.
"Toledo came out with a lot of energy tonight and played well," Head Coach
John Ross said. "I think we matched them for most of the game but there were some moments where they took advantage of."
Both of Toledo's goals were scored by Hanna Scafaria of the Rockets, first to tie the game at 1-1 and then the overtime winner. The goal in overtime was scored in the 108
th minute after she headed home a cross that was sent over NIU keeper
Amy Annala (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) and Scafaria also scored in the 69
th minute scoring from the doorstep in a scramble.
The Huskies' goal came in the 63
rd minute as junior
Lauren Gierman (Prospect Heights, Ill./John Hersey) scored her first goal since 2015 as she scored while taking a corner kick. Gierman, who missed the 2016 season due to injury, leads NIU in assists with four on the season so far and served multiple free kicks into scoring opportunities, including having a free kick shot save just prior to scoring on the corner kick.
"The way she played tonight, this was Lauren's 'I'm back' game even though she's played so well for us all year," Ross said. "Each game she's getting stronger and stronger and we'll continue to increase her role."
The game's final statistics came out pretty even as NIU only outshot Toledo 15-12 with two more shots on goal, each team took three corner kicks and fouls finished dead even at 15-15. With the high foul count in the 108-minute game, both teams were tested physically as the Huskies shortened their bench playing six subs after back-to-back games of using eight players off the bench.
NIU women's soccer will continue the MAC schedule at home this weekend as they welcome in Bowling Green this Sunday at 2:00 p.m. CT as the 1997 MAC Championship team will also be honored.
