OXFORD, Ohio -- After an even opening hour to the contest, Miami (Ohio) scored four goals in the final 30 minutes to claim a 4-0 victory over the Northern Illinois University women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon at the Miami Soccer Field.
A goal from Olivia Winnett just past the hour mark opened the scoring for the RedHawks and two goals in the final two minutes helped seal the victory.
In the second minute of the contest, NIU senior goalkeeper
MacKenzie Lee (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) collected a shot by Miami's Soph Spinell. NIU then had a good spell in the early going as a shot from junior
Abby Gregg (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) went wide in the eighth minute, senior
Delaney Loprieno (Algonquin, Ill./Huntley) forced a save from Miami goalkeeper Lauren Parker a minute later and, in the 13th minute, sophomore
Amanda Czerniak (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) sent a shot just wide.
As halftime approached, Lee was forced into another save on a shot from Spinell in the 37th minute. That would be the last time either goalkeeper was called upon in the opening 45 minutes as the match went into halftime scoreless.
NIU (1-13, 0-6 MAC) had the first look at goal of the second half as Gregg sent a shot wide in the 51st minute. The Huskies then forced Parker back into action in the 63rd minute as a header from junior
Grace Louis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) was saved by the Miami goalkeeper.
The RedHawks finally broke the deadlock in the 65th minute as Kristina DeMarco played a pass to Winnett inside the box and Winnett's shot found the back of the net to give Miami a 1-0 lead.
A foul in the box by the Huskies gave Miami (3-9-1, 1-5 MAC) an opportunity from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute. Lyda Bogdanovitch stepped up to take the penalty for the RedHawks and beat Lee to give Miami a 2-0 advantage.
NIU created a handful of chances to cut the Miami lead in half. A shot from senior
Emilie Furuseth Haugan (Hlavstad, Norway/National Sports Academy) went wide in the 77th minute and a header from junior
Natalie Yass (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) couldn't find the target in the 80th minute.
With the Huskies pressing to try to get back in the game, Miami scored twice in the final four minutes. Bogdanovitch netted her second goal of the contest in the 87th minute as she dribbled into the box and fired a shot into the top corner.
Just 49 seconds later, Tyler Klika closed the scoring for Miami as her shot from distance gave the RedHawks their fourth goal of the afternoon.
NIU will return home next weekend for its final two home games of the regular season. The Huskies will host Eastern Michigan on Friday, Oct. 12, at 6 p.m., and Central Michigan on Sunday, Oct. 14, at 2 p.m.
