DEKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University women's basketball looks for its third consecutive win Friday night when it hosts the Chicago State Cougars at the NIU Convocation Center. Tipoff is at 6 p.m.
The Huskies will celebrate the 15
th anniversary of the Christmas film "Elf" Friday night. Fans can receive free admission to the game with the donation of an unwrapped toy.
NIU (6-4) won consecutive games for the first time this season with Monday night's 78-59 win over Eastern Illinois. Senior guard
Mikayla Voigt (Slinger, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) led all players with 25 points and nine rebounds, going 5-for-9 from the three-point line. Over the last six games, Voigt is averaging 25 points per game while shooting 49.2 percent from the three-point line. Voigt is one of three players leading the nation in three-pointers made this season with 41. She leads the Mid-American Conference in three-point field goal percentage at 45.1 percent and is third in points per game at 20.2.
Since being inserted into the starting lineup on Dec. 7, sophomore guard
Gabby Nikitinaite (Orpington, Kent, UK/Coopers School) has averaged 19.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 5.7 assists per game. In her first start of the season, Nikitinaite led NIU with a career-high 27 points at Southern Illinois. She then dished out a career-high nine assists with 15 points against Western Illinois. On Monday, Nikitinaite had 16 points, six rebounds, and a career-high four steals in the win over Eastern Illinois. Nikitinaite has made her last 22 free throw attempts.
The Huskies lead the all-time series against Chicago State 14-4. NIU has won each of the last five meetings, including last season's 80-59 win at Chicago State. The Cougars enter Friday's game with a record of 0-10 on the year after a 97-35 loss at Northwestern on Monday. Tyeshia Bowers leads Chicago State in scoring with 16.1 points per game.
