NIU Hosts Brown For Final Non-Conference Test Monday

Huskies Host Bears On New Year’s Eve

DEKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University women's basketball team wraps up it's non-conference slate Monday afternoon when the Huskies take on the Brown Bears at 1 p.m. at the NIU Convocation Center.
 
NIU (7-4) is a perfect 5-0 at the Convocation Center this season after a 114-52 win over Chicago State on Dec. 21. The Huskies' 114 points tied a single-game Convocation Center record set in a 114-104 double overtime win over Milwaukee on Nov. 16, 2016. NIU is averaging 86.4 points per game at home so far this season, shooting 44.9 percent from the field with a +7.0 turnover margin. The win over the Cougars was NIU's third consecutive victory after trading wins and losses in the first eight games of the season. NIU is averaging 92.7 points per game during this winning streak, holding opponents to just 57.3 points per game.
 
Five Huskies scored in double-figures against Chicago State, led by senior guard Mikayla Voigt's (Slinger, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) 29 points. Voigt is averaging 27 points and seven rebounds per game in December, shooting 54.3 percent from the field. Gabby Nikitinaite (Orpington, Kent, UK/Coopers School) added 19 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Myia Starks (Oswego, Ill./Nequa Valley) and Paulina Castro (Elgin, Ill./Harvest Christian) each scored 14 points with Castro tying a career-high. Ally May (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) had 12 points.
 
NIU and Brown will meet on the hardwood for the first time on Monday. The Huskies are 1-0 against the Ivy League this season, defeating Yale at the Convocation Center in the season opener 89-80 in the Preseason WNIT. Brown enters this weekend with a 6-6 record after a 102-96 overtime loss at Maine on Dec. 8. Senior forward Erika Steeves led the Bears with 30 points and 12 rebounds. Justine Gaziano added 15 points as Brown had six players scored in double-figures. Gaziano leads Brown in scoring at 19.5 points per game. Brown averages 72.8 points per game and allows 73.6 points per game.
