DEKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University Women's Tennis team hopes to carry the success of last weekend's sweep into Bloomington, Ill. when the Huskies face Illinois State Saturday afternoon.
"The team is looking to build on last weekend's performances," said NIU head coach
Tanya Mahefu. "We face a tough team tomorrow, but are looking forward to competing and getting better."
NIU (2-3), which won last year's meeting with Illinois State, 5-2, posted wins over Milwaukee and SIUE at the Boylan Tennis Center in Rockford. NIU was led by
Thisuri Molligoda (Colombo, Sri-Lanka) and
Evelyn Youel (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) at No. 1 doubles, while Molligoda paced the Huskies at No. 1 singles.
The Huskie duo were tested in the first match of the weekend, but went on to defeat Milwaukee's Labina Pertrovska and Daniel Fuentes, 6-4, and completed their perfect weekend with a 6-3 win over Ann-Christine Link and Lara Tupper, helping NIU win the doubles point and the match, 7-0.
Molligoda improved to 3-2 on the season after posting a pair of wins at No. 1 singles this past weekend. She opened the weekend with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Labina Petrovska of Milwaukee on Friday and a straight set victory over Lara Tupper of SIUE on Sunday, 6-2, 6-0, to help the Huskies to a 7-0 win over the Cougars and a 2-0 record on the weekend.
