DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Northern Illinois University Women's Tennis team fell to Bethune-Cookman, 4-3, on Wednesday.
"This is a disappointing loss," said NIU head coach
Tanya Mahefu. "We played very flat. I hope we can learn from this loss and turn it around."
NIU (4-9) won three singles matches on the day, but losing the doubles' point to the Lady Wildcats cost the Huskies. Bethune-Cookman won both matches at No. 1 and 2 singles, 6-3.
Maria Potsi (Athens Greece/1st Gel Cholargou) won her third-straight singles match. The Huskie freshman dropped the first set, 2-6 but scored a 6-3, 6-0 victory in second and third sets to post the victory over Alejandra Vidal.
Brodie Walker (Bristol, England/Bristol Grammar School) posted a straight set win over Karen Romero, 6-0, 6-3. Bethune-Cookman did not field a competitor at No. 6 singles.
Thisuri Molligoda (Colombo, Sri-Lanka) fell to her opponent to three sets. After taking the first set 6-2, Matea Roki won the next two sets, 6-4, 6-2. Lara Slikso (Essendon, Australia/St. Columba's College) battled at No. 5 singles, but ended up falling to Phatismo Ruele, 6-4, 7-5.
The NIU women's tennis team returns to the court Thursday, March 15 when the Huskies return to Orlando, Fla. to face Florida A&M. The match begins at 9 a.m. CT.
