DEKALB, Ill. – Eleven different players scored, including a game-high 19 points from senior
Eugene German (Gary, Ind./21st Century Charter), as the Northern Illinois University men's basketball team topped Roosevelt, 85-50, in an exhibition game on Tuesday night (Nov. 5) at the NIU Convocation Center.
Junior
Zaire Mateen (Queens, N.Y./Laramie County Community College) added 10 points and junior
Chris Johnson (Chicago, Ill./South Suburban College) chipped in 12 rebounds in 15 minutes.
"We wanted to make sure that all of our guys got time," said NIU head coach
Mark Montgomery. "If you take the first half and hold a team to 10 points, you got everything (that you wanted to) accomplished, but the real season starts on Saturday."
After a slow start on the offensive end, NIU used an 11-0 run to take a 20-4 lead just past the midway point of the opening half. German made a pair of triples during the burst and Mateen also added a trifecta as the Huskies raced out to the comfortable lead.
NIU scored the final 13 points to close the opening half as the Huskies took a 39-10 lead into the intermission.
German scored 14 in 11 first half minutes and the Huskies held Roosevelt to just 12.9 percent (4-of-31) shooting in the opening 20 minutes.
Both teams shot the ball better after the intermission as NIU went 15-of-32 (46.9 percent) from the field after the break and Roosevelt was 17-of-35 (48.6 percent).
Junior
Nathan Scott (Naperville, Ill./Olney Central College) scored nine points and added seven rebounds while freshman
Tyler Cochran (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) had a game-high four assists, along with four points and six rebounds. NIU dished out 17 assists on 29 made field goals.
Quin Riggins scored 13 points to lead Roosevelt, Mark Johnson and Brian Kern each had seven rebounds for the Lakers.
NIU will open the 2019-20 regular season on Saturday afternoon, November 9, as the Huskies welcome Northern Iowa to the NIU Convocation Center. Tipoff against the Panthers is scheduled for 3 p.m.
