SAN DIEGO – The Northern Illinois University softball team took a pair of games, including one in walk-off fashion, on the second day of the 29th Annual Campbell/Cartier Classic hosted by San Diego State Saturday.
The Huskie (6-3) bats erupted with a 13-2 six-inning victory over Middle Tennessee before posting a seventh-inning rally to defeat Grand Canyon, 3-2.
"In the first game we were able to score early and often with our defense holding Middle Tennessee in key situations," said NIU head coach Christina Sutcliffe. "In the second game, Grand Canyon had us off balance, but we stayed patient and made adjustments to fight back at the end for a total team win. This team has proven we will fight from the first pitch until the last."
Trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh against Grand Canyon, the Huskies plated three runs, with the game-winner coming off the bat of Abby Howlett (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North). All three runs came with two outs.
With runners at second and third with two outs, Kira Mickelson (Wheatland, Wis./Westosha) tied the game with a single to centerfield, driving in Dominique Greeno (Lacey, Wash./North Thurston) and Jessica Rio (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield East).
Two batters later and with Katie Lamich (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) pinch running for Mickelson, Howlett singled to shortstop to drive in Lamich and give the Huskies the win.
NIU scored multiple runs in multiple innings in its victory over the Blue Raiders. For the seventh time in nine games, the Huskies scored first plating seven runs in the second, two in the fifth and four in the sixth.
Bianca Barone (Machesney Park, Ill./Harlem) delivered the biggest blow in the second inning. With NIU already leading 3-0, the Huskie freshman blasted her first career home run, a grand slam, over the left field fence.
Barone went 3-for-4 on the day with five RBIs and a run scored.
After Middle Tennessee scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, NIU responded with two runs in the top of the fifth. The Huskies completed the game with four runs in the top of the sixth, highlighted by Jenny Van Geertry's (Mokena, Ill/Lincoln-Way East) team-leading fourth home run of the year.
NIU concludes play in the 29th Annual Campbell/Cartier Classic Sunday when the Huskies face Middle Tennessee. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. CT.
