EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University women's team was edged by SIUE, 4-3 at the Edwardsville Y Sunday.

After losing the doubles point, the Huskies (2-7) split the six singles matches. NIU trailed 3-0 after losing at Nos. 3 and 5 singles. However, the Huskies mounted a charge, winning the next three matches.

Maria Potsi (Athens, Greece/1st Gel Cholargou) put NIU on the board with a 7-5, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles, while Brodie Walker (Bristol, England/Bristol Grammar) cut the deficit to one with a 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles. Paula Veyhle (Stuttgart, Germany) tied the match at 3-3 with her triumph at No. 4 singles.

Unfortunately for NIU, freshman Fernanda Naves (Mexico City, Mexico) dropped her match at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 and was unable to secure the win for the Huskies.

"We need to compete better as a team," said NIU head coach Tanya Mahefu. "We have four matches to go before conference and we really need to look ourselves in the mirror and take ownership and be better. We have the ability but need to do better."

The Huskies are off next week, but return to the court Friday, Mar. 8 when NIU plays host to UIC. The match begins at 11 a.m. CT.
