HAMMOND, La. – The Northern Illinois University softball team split its doubleheader on the second day of the Lion Classic I hosted by Southeastern Louisiana State Saturday.
The Huskies (2-2) opened the day with a five-inning 8-0 victory over Mississippi Valley State, before dropping a 5-2 decision to the host Lady Lions.
"Obviously, in the first game, we were able to score in multiple innings," said NIU head coach Christina Sutcliffe. "We put the game out of reach and were able to give a lot of kids some opportunities to get some experience.
"The second game, we played five pretty good innings. We're going to learn from those situations and figure out how to play entire games."
NIU pounded out seven hits in its win over Devilettes, led by Jenny Van Geertry. The Huskie senior went 3-for-3 on the day, including two home runs, with two RBIs and three runs scored. Dominique Greeno (Lacey, Wash./North Thurston)was right behind her, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Mackenzie Bryant was solid in the pitcher's circle, allowing just two hits and walk while striking out six in five innings of work.
The Huskie scored early and often, tallying three runs in the first, three in the third and a pair of runs in the fifth to seal the win. Van Geertry's first home run came on a solo shot in the top of the third. Her second homer was a one-out solo shot in the fifth, which turned out to be the game winner.
"I'm pretty happy with the production out of quite a few players," Sutcliffe said. "We're balancing the speed and the power of our line up."
Runs were a little harder to come by in NIU's rematch with Southeastern Louisiana. The big inning also hurt the Huskies in their loss to the Lady Lions. NIU, which scored first in every inning of the tournament, took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Amberly Rodriguez (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield) scored when Sam Schmidt (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) reached on a fielder's choice.
NIU added another run in the top of the sixth when Kira Mickelson (Wheatland, Wis./Westosha Central) scored on an RBI single by Kayla Scaperrotta (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs Charter School).
Unfortunately for NIU, Southeastern Louisiana stormed back in the bottom of the sixth with five runs. The Huskies were unable to rally in the top of the seventh and were forced to take a tough loss.
NIU wraps up play in the Lion Classic I Sunday with a single game against Nicholls State. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. CT.
