ST. LOUIS – The Northern Illinois University softball team split its doubleheader on the final day of the Billiken Spring Tournament Saturday.
The Huskies (13-14) scored a 5-3 victory over Detroit Mercy (7-14) to extend their winning streak to four games, before falling to Southeast Missouri State (19-7), 14-4, in the tournament finale.
"It was great having a successful weekend going 4-1," said NIU head coach Christina Sutcliffe. "We look forward to moving into conference and seeing where the next part of our season will take us. Now the real work begins."
With the scored tied 3-3 heading into the top of the seventh, the Huskies put together a late rally to wrestle control of the game. After the first two Huskies reached and one out, freshman Katie Keller (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) stepped to the plate and drove in the leading run on a double to center to score Amberly Rodriquez (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield).
Anne Allen (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way North), who advanced to third on the play, scored when Bianca Barone (Machesney Park, Ill./Harlem) reached on a fielder's choice to give NIU an insurance run.
Alex Frenz (Oakville, Mo./Oakville), who came in to pitch in relief of Mackenzie Bryan (Elwood, Ind./Elwood) for the final two innings, coaxed a fly out and struck out the final two batters of the game to record the win.
Keller shined against the Titans, going 3-for-4 and driving in three runs from the cleanup spot. Allen went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Detroit Mercy jumped on top of the Huskies with a run in the first and two in the second. NIU responded with two runs in the third and another in the fifth. Jenny Van Geertry (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) drove in the first run when she reached on a fielder's choice, while Keller grounded out to second to pull NIU within a run. Keller's one-out double in the top of the fifth tied the game, 3-3.
The second game of the day was all SEMO. The Redhawks (19-7) scored in all five innings, scoring multiple runs in four of those five. The big blow came in the fourth inning.
With the Redhawks leading, 3-2, SEMO took control of the game in the third with a four spot, before putting it out of reach with five in the fourth.
The Huskies return to action Friday when NIU opens conference play with a weekend set at Buffalo. First pitch for Friday's game is set for 2 p.m. CT, with a doubleheader Saturday.
