SEATTLE – Alex Frenz became the first Northern Illinois University softball pitcher to throw a perfect game since 1995 as the Huskies won their first game of the Husky Classic, hosted by Washington Friday.
Frenz struck out four as the Huskie (9-8) senior threw five innings of perfect softball and the defense was stellar behind her in NIU's 9-0 victory over Idaho State. It was the Huskies' first perfect game since Angie Zuspann accomplished the feat against Valparaiso on April 6, 1995.
"Alex threw an amazing game this afternoon," said NIU head coach Christina Sutcliffe. "What an accomplishment for her. I'm so happy with our overall support both offensively and defensively for her."
After a 1-2-3 top of the first, the Huskies gave Frenz a solid cushion with a four spot in the bottom of the frame. Hometown Huskie Dominique Greeno (Lacey, Wash./North Thurston) opened the scoring with an RBI groundout to score Amberly Rodriguez (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield). Katie Keller (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) followed that up with an RBI double, while Abby Howlett (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) capped the inning's scoring with a two-run double.
The Huskies tacked on two more runs in the second on a solo shot by Anne Allen and an RBI double by Keller to make the score, 6-0.
After adding a run in the third, NIU put the game out of reach in the fourth with a pair of runs. Greeno drove in her second run of the game on a double to center field. Sam Schmidt (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) then singled to center to give NIU a 9-0 lead.
Frenz induced a groundout and a pair of flyouts to end the inning and complete her perfect game.
Unfortunately, the Huskie bats were silenced in the second game of the day as NIU suffered an 8-0 setback to host Washington in the second game of the day.
Washington jumped on top of NIU in the second with a five spot and added a run in the third. UW scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to win the game.
"Unfortunately we didn't get off the field at times we could have," Sutcliffe said. "However, we definitely got better today as a unit."
The Huskies return to the diamond tomorrow when NIU faces Seattle at 1:15 p.m. CT before a rematch with Washington at 5:45 p.m. CT. Fans can watch both games or follow all the action through live scoring on gohguskies.com.
