Huskies Shut Out At Miami To Open Series

OXFORD, OH – The Northern Illinois University baseball team was shutout for the second time this season on Friday, getting just five hits against the Miami RedHawks in a 12-0 loss at McKie Field.

NIU (12-29, 8-8 MAC) got singles from Tommy Szczasny (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way North) and Dylan Lonteen (Peoria, Ill./Illinois Central College) in the first inning, but were held scoreless by RedHawks starting pitcher Sam Bachman. Miami opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. After a one-out single by Will Vogelgesang, Landon Stephens drove him in with a double to right centerfield for the game's first run. Jordan Stephens followed with a run-scoring single to make the score 2-0. Erik Hedmark (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee-Crown) held the damage at two runs with a flyout and a strikeout to end the inning.

Miami (31-10) came alive for five runs in the bottom of the third. Five different RedHawks drove in a run in the frame. Four of the runs came with two outs, as back-to-back RBI singles by Christian Tejada and Vogelgesang made the score 7-0. The Huskies attempted to get in the game in the fourth. With one out, Lonteen and Jake Dunham (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) hit back-to-back singles. Nick Drobushevich (Moline, Ill./Moline) then drew a walk to load the bases. Bachman left the bases loaded after striking out Kam Smith (Colonial Beach, Va./The Steward School) and getting Jordan Larson (Dodgeville, Wis./College of DuPage) to line out.

The RedHawks tacked on a run in both the fourth and fifth innings to go up 9-0. The Huskies left the bases loaded in the fifth, and another two runners on base in the top of the eighth.

Due to rain in the forecast for Saturday afternoon, tomorrow's game has been moved up to a 12 p.m. CT first pitch.
