INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Despite holding a 20-7 edge in total shots, the Northern Illinois University men's soccer team fell to IUPUI, 1-0, on Friday afternoon (Aug. 23) in its second exhibition match of the fall.
"The first half was fairly even, we really didn't find our rhythm until the final 10 minutes (of the half), so we were a little frustrated," said NIU head coach
Ryan Swan. "After halftime we had a lot of possession and chances but (IUPUI) caught us on the counterattack. We got in good positions but were just unable to convert any of them."
The Huskies and Jaguars each recorded four shots in an opening 45 minutes that finished scoreless, NIU earned five corners in the first half to just one for the hosts.
IUPUI broke the deadlock in the 69th minute on a goal by Riley Shives off a feed from Carson Shrader. The goal came against the run of play as the Huskies registered 16 second half shots to just three from the Jaguars. IUPUI goalkeeper Quinn McCallion made six saves in the contest, playing all 90 minutes, while redshirt freshman
Martin Sanchez (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) and senior Christoph Köninger (Achern, Germany/Gymnasium Achern) each played 45 minutes between the sticks for the Huskies.
NIU will return home on Sunday, August 25, as the Huskies host Detroit Mercy in their final exhibition contest. Kickoff against the Titans is scheduled for 2 p.m. and admission for all NIU soccer games is free of charge.
