DEKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University women's team won its first two dual matches of the season winning a doubleheader over Green Bay and Olivet Nazarene Friday.

The Huskies earned its first victory in dual match play this season when NIU defeated Green Bay 6-1 Friday afternoon at the Boylan Tennis Center before scoring a 7-0 triumph over Olivet Nazarene at Chick Evans Field House.

"I thought our effort today was outstanding," said NIU head coach Eric Burns. "We brought great energy in both matches."

NIU jumped off to a strong start against Green Bay, earning the doubles point with a victory in all three matches and went on to win five of the six singles matches. Green Bay won the first singles match of the day in straight sets at No. 2 singles, 1-6, 4-6.

Maria Potsi defeated Yasmin Glazbrook in three sets at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, while her teammate Lara Slisko defeated Theresa Tebon in three sets at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 10-6. NIU scored two additional singles wins from Christy Robinson, who beat Mia Melnizki at No. 4, 6-4, 6-4, and Paula Veyhle, who defeated Kimberley Kaome by the same score at No. 5.

"The match with Green Bay was a good one for us," said Burns. "They really made us work to close out things. Credit to them and their program. They really fought us on all courts today and our girls stepped up to the challenge. This was just what we needed to start the season. We're really proud of the effort today."

Following the win over the Phoenix, NIU returned to campus to face Olivet Nazarene. The Huskies were able to maintain the momentum from the first match of the day winning all 14 sets.

Veyhle and Slisko were particularly impressive in the night cap, winning at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively, by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores. Potsi and Naves were equally impressive at No. 1 and No. 2 singles with each winning 6-0, 6-1.

The Huskies will be back in action Friday, Jan. 31 when NIU travels to Wisconsin. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
